Maxillofacial Surgery

Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) is a discipline that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of various anomalies of the mouth, jaw and face. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons extract complicated wisdom teeth and place dental implants for patients who lost their teeth. These procedures could be performed in an out-patient setting using local anesthesia, nitrous-oxide administration or intravenous sedation by qualified oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Maxillofacial surgeons treat maxillofacial infections and fractures of the jaw and the face. They are involved in conservative and surgical arthroscopic or reconstructive procedures for various temporomandibular joint disorders. Maxillofacial surgeons treat various facial and jaw tumors and reconstruct them. They also correct jaw deformities by orthognathic surgery which aims at the re-establishing the proper jaw relationships by aligning the jaws properly to improve function and facial esthetics. Combined with esthetic facial surgery or minimally-invasive cosmetic facial procedures such as the use of botox or fillers, maxillofacial surgeons aim at maximizing facial esthetics.
