Acute respiratory distress syndrome
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) occurs when the lungs are injured, most commonly by a severe infection (in the lung or in other organs) or by trauma. The lungs become filled with fluid (pulmonary edema) leading to a severe impairment in gas exchange. The patient’s blood oxygen level drops dramatically, and breathing becomes laborious and rapid.
Treatment of ARDS can be challenging; it is usually performed in the ICU. Invasive mechanical ventilation is required to support breathing and to increase oxygen levels in the blood. Other treatments and supportive measures are required to help you through this difficult period.
