Insomnia
Insomnia is difficulty going to sleep or maintaining sleep after falling asleep. There are 3 types of insomnia:
-
Transient insomnia: Usually lasts for a few days, brought by stress or excitement, follows a brief illness, or long distance travel (jet lag).
-
Short-term insomnia: Lasting for a few weeks, often associated with ongoing stress (work, family…) it resolves after the precipitating event is gone.
-
Long-term insomnia: Lasting for months & years, often due to psychologic factors like depression or due to chronic illnesses. People often complain of difficulty going to sleep, in addition to appetite disturbance, fatigue, loss of interest in enjoyable activities, loss of concentration and sometimes thoughts of deaths and suicide.
