Pneumonia
Pneumonia is an infection or inflammation of the lungs. Alveoli (air sacs) are filled with pus and other fluids, making it difficult for oxygen to reach the blood. Pneumonias can affect anyone, although the elderly and people with a chronic illness are at higher risk. Bacteria are the leading causes of pneumonia.
Symptoms can develop suddenly or gradually and commonly include
-
High fever and chills
-
Fatigue
-
rapid breathing
-
Cough with mucus production
-
Chest pain
Treatment usually includes antibiotics and other supportive medications. Hospitalization for intravenous antibiotic therapy is sometimes required.
